Following their fantastic EP ‘Aquamarine’ and its recent success we got to chat with the Berlin based Duo Trent Voyage and Elena Moroder.
Trent who has been drumming since an early age, got into production after a friend had sent a track via Bluetooth which peaked the interest of the Irish producer and led to the download of a demo version of FL Studio. Growing up in Waterford (Ireland), Trent said he quite felt lucky growing up in his home town Waterford where there was a strong electronic scene. “A promoter in Waterford called Re:publik was bringing big names like Kerri Chandler, Maceo Plex and Nic Fanciulli back in 2013. My first night out I was lucky enough to see Kerri Chandler play which really opened my mind up to house music.
I was involved with another collective and label Koma. They took me under their wing in those early formative years. We ran nights in a small venue called ‘The Loft’. We were all big fans of classic house and we used to rinse early Slapfunk stuff back then. We had some great times!”
Speaking with Trent about the impression Berlin has left on him and if he has gained any inspiration he said,
“Berlin offers a ton of club culture experiences every weekend so 100% it has shaped my sound.
I think it’s vital for anyone producing dance music to soak up as much of the atmosphere and energy from your favourite parties. This is fuel for when I am in the studio and I try to reflect my experiences in my productions. ‘Can I capture the energy and vibe of this entire party in one track?’ is how I generally operate. “
Trent’s production is nearly always layered with beautiful vocals from his partner Elena Moroder, who was born and still resides in Berlin. Most recently on their latest EP ‘Aquamarine’, the lead single with the same title has a beautiful combination of minimal house (the like you could expect from French trio Apollonia) with almost ghostly like vocals that makes the track so rememberable and is now getting the recognition it truly deserves with big plays at Sunwaves festival and most recently support from UK DJ and Producers Rossi & Josh Baker. Trent and Elena commented “ We are blown away by the response we felt a lot of pressure after the first release so we were really not sure if this record was going to work on the dance floor as we took a different direction this time. This was the first time we have seen our tracks being played to bigger rooms and festivals so we are grateful for all the support! “
Over on YouTube on Banana Box, Elena explains how she got into the lane of a vocalist in electronic music after really getting into Diana Ross and The Supremes. When speaking to Elena about her relationship with electronic music and how she fell in love with the genre she tells us, “ I fell into dance music because I think that it’s a good way for me to combine what I studied and love to do with a fun environment. I think Berlin is a very receptive city to this. It feels like it happened quite naturally.
I really enjoy artists like ‘the supremes’ and I think that they really inspire me melodically and the lyrical repetition that underlines the sentiment and makes the track hookie. An Italian artist that I also really love and look at for inspiration is Ornella Vanoni.”
When talking to the pair about any challenges they faced when performing live they said “ As a singer it is challenging to perform at 4am and taking care of your voice involves rest which is not what you always get when performing late. Also having enough snacks on hand is key!
It took us some time to translate tracks into the live environment as they were initially crafted without a live performance in mind. But after some trials we figured out a system that we are comfortable with.”
With now two successful EP’s under their belt and support across some of the biggest stages in Europe, we can’t wait to see what Trent and Elena have in store next for us. Check out their latest EP ‘Aquamarine’ below out now on all streaming platforms.
